REFLEXIVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TOPIC

1. What is the brain?
R: The brain is one of the most important and complex organs of the body.

2. What is aphasia?
R: Aphasia is the neurological term for any language disorder that results from acquired brain damage caused by disease or trauma.

3. What is hemispherectomy?
R: Is a surgical procedure which involves total or partial removal of an affected cerebral hemisphere or disconnecting the affected cerebral hemisphere from the unaffected side.

4. What do some studies and evidences say about the right and left hemispheres?
R: Despite strong evidence that the left hemisphere is predetermined to be the language hemisphere in most humans, some studies suggest that the right hemisphere also plays a role in the earliest stages of language acquisition.

5.What is the control period?
R: A critical period is a maturational stage in the lifespan of an organismduring which the nervous system is especially sensitive to certainenvironmental stimuli. If, for some reason, the organism does not receivethe appropriate stimulus during this "critical period" to learn a given skillor trait, it may be difficult, ultimately less successful, or even impossible, to develop some functions later in life.

6.What happens During and After the critical period?
R: During this Critical period, language acquisition proceeds easily, swiftly, and without external intervention. After this period, the acquisition of grammar is difficult and, for most individuals, never fully achieved. (Children deprived of language during this critical period show atypicalpatterns of brain lateralization).

7. What happens with children that have Specific Language Impairment?
R: They do not have brain lesions. They show no other cognitive deficits. Only their linguistic ability is affected and often only specific aspects of grammar are impaired.

8. What are the difficulties that a child with SLI presents?
R: They have problems with the use of function words such as articles, prepositions, and auxiliary verbs.

9. What is genetic basis of language?
R: Studies of genetic disorders also reveals that one cognitive domain can develop normally along with abnormal development in the other domains, and they also underscore the strong biological basis  of language.

10. Do the different genetic disorders affect the language?
R: According to genetic studies when a chromosome is abnormal, it creates different syndromes that affect communication in different ways, preventing them from being able to communicate with others.
